Senior HVAC / Refrigeration R&D Engineer

Position Summary The HVAC / Refrigeration R&D Engineer will design, build, and test HVAC/R equipment to lead the development of a new automotive application for an electric vehicle designed to operate in high temperature environments.
Core Accountabilities and Essential Functions • R&D o Review and revise thermal system architecture to achieve overall HVAC and thermal system requirements. o Design and develop the HVAC system to meet system requirements while optimizing for efficiency, cost, weight, manufacturability, and serviceability. o Design/identify HVAC components to be included in the system such as heat exchangers, blower motors, actuators, temperature sensors, electronic expansion valves, etc. o Develop and mature concepts and advanced designs following design creation process, iterating with simulation teams to achieve performance targets and change management. • Manufacturing/Test/Integration o Procure and/or build component hardware. o Assemble prototype hardware for benchtop and testing. o Create test plans, execute tests, and document results and findings. o Work with manufacturing lead and other engineers to integrate HVAC system to vehicle. o Develop control models to optimize for performance, efficiency, noise, and cost.
Required Education and Experience • 4-year degree from an accredited college or university in mechanical engineering or similar field in engineering/science or a combination of education and relevant experience. • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with HVAC systems and components, such as heat pumps, blowers, heat exchangers, valves, refrigerants, etc. preferably related to electronic automotive design, development, and testing. • Experience with test fixture design and part prototyping.
Required Qualifications • Ability and willingness to work long hours; weekends when necessary and travel as required. • Knowledge of engineering materials, processes, and tooling. • Understanding of thermal, mechanical, noise, vibration, durability, corrosion, and electrical requirements for HVAC products. • Familiarity with relevant manufacturing techniques of HVAC systems and components, such as heat pumps, heat exchangers, valves, etc. • Proficiency with CAD tool (NX or Onshape preferrable). • Demonstratable motivation and ability to solve novel, difficult design problems with tight timing constraints. • Effective communication skills to engage in technical discussions with crossfunctional teams.
